Kindergarten Math Skills Checklist

Before entering kindergarten, children can benefit from developing certain foundational math skills. These skills help set the stage for their future mathematical understanding. Here are some math skills that children can work on before starting kindergarten:

  1. Counting:
Children should be able to count orally from at least 1 to 10, and ideally up to 20 or higher. They should understand that counting represents quantity.

  2. Number recognition:
Children should be able to recognize and identify numbers from 1 to 10 (or higher). They should be able to match the written numeral with the corresponding quantity.

  3. Number order:
Children should have a basic understanding of number order and be able to arrange numbers in sequential order.

  4. Basic shapes:

Children should be familiar with basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. They should be able to identify and name these shapes.

  5. Patterning:
Children can explore and create simple patterns using objects, colors, or shapes. They should be able to recognize and extend simple patterns.

  6. Comparing and sorting:
Children should be able to compare objects based on size, shape, or quantity (e.g., "Which one is bigger? Which one is smaller?"). They should also be able to sort objects into groups based on specific attributes.

  7. Measurement:
Introducing basic measurement concepts such as length (longer/shorter), weight (heavier/lighter), and capacity (more/less) can be beneficial.

  8. Basic addition and subtraction:
While not essential, some children may already have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction concepts, such as combining sets of objects or taking away objects.

It's important to note that children develop at different rates, and not all children will have mastered these skills before starting kindergarten. However, providing opportunities for exploration and play that incorporate these math concepts can help set a strong foundation for future mathematical learning.
