A Twist on Fairytales: Highlights from Our Day Camps
We recently had the privilege of hosting two captivating day camps that transported students into the enchanting realm of fairytales– with a delightful twist. Our theme “A Twist on Fairytales” allowed us to see our favourite fairytales in a new light, challenging our imagination.
Our Stratford Hall Pro-D Day Camp and Crofton Junior Kindergarten Year End Celebration provided a platform for young learners to explore the magic of storytelling in innovative and engaging ways.
Stratford Hall Pro-D Day Camp
During our Stratford Hall Pro-D Day camp, our students embarked on a literary adventure in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
In the morning, we delved into the whimsical tales of "The Emperor Penguin's New Coat," "The Real Princess: A Mathematical Tale," and "Sleeping Beauty- 100 Years Later." Students engaged in a fairytale word search, crafted their own fairytales with a unique twist, and brought their visions to life through captivating watercolor illustrations of their own "Princess and the Pea" beds.
The afternoon session was equally enchanting, as we read "Looney Little The Ice Cap is Melting," "The Princess and the Frozen Peas," and "Hansel and Gretel and the Green Witch." The students demonstrated their keen observational skills, recognizing the familiar stories and eagerly explaining the delightful twists. They further channeled their creativity by designing their dream fairytale homes, ranging from castles of shells to fairy mushroom abodes to kingdoms in the clouds to tree-house havens.
Crofton Junior Kindergarten Year End Celebration Camp
Our Crofton Junior Kindergarten Year End Celebration also embraced the "A Twist on Fairytales" theme, captivating our young learners with a fresh perspective on classic tales.
We began with the story "Princess Penelope Hates Peas," which taught us that we might discover we actually love new foods if we can first give them a try. Next, "Snow White Sees the Light" showed how sharing the workload can create a more equitable environment. Finally, "Jacqueline and the Beanstalk" challenged us to avoid judging someone before we have the chance to meet them.
During the craft portion of the celebration, the students demonstrated their creativity and fine motor skills by decorating magical wands with stars, glitter, and gems. For those with a little extra time, we even recited a delightful fairy poem.
Throughout both day camps, our students displayed boundless enthusiasm, eagerly raising their hands, answering questions, and relating the stories to their own lives. The "A Twist on Fairytales" theme ignited their imagination and fostered a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling.
As we reflect on these enchanting experiences, we are filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for the opportunity to have facilitated such a magical learning environment for our students. The lasting impact of these day camps will undoubtedly continue to inspire the young minds that participated, as they carry the spirit of these reimagined fairytales with them on their educational journeys.
